Buy a raffle ticket for $5 (or five tickets for $20) to help raise money to support the instrumental music program at Olympic Hills Elementary School.  Money is badly needed, as over 60% of the school students’ families live below the poverty line and school district funding has been drastically reduced.  Prize is a 2003 desktop computer with DVD burner.  Tickets sold up to date of drawing, March 15.  For tickets, call 364-0366 or email Jim Bennett at jbennett@bcc.ctc.edu .  For information about Olympic Hills Elementary and its music program, call or email Principal Zoe Jenkins (252-4300, zjenkins@seattleschools.org ).

New Disability Housing Coming to North End

Parkview Services, a provider of homes for people with developmental disabilities, has bought a home near NE 140th St. and 35th Ave. NE, the agency’s eighth home in the north end.  This building will become home to three people who use wheelchairs.  They will be supported by Provail, formerly United Cerebral Palsy.  Parkview will handle maintenance, insurance, and neighborhood relations.  Parkview has sent letters about the project to neighbors and will host an open house soon.

Parkview Services is a King County-based non-profit organization that supports people with developmental disabilities and their families.  They have been doing so for over 35 years.  Parkview's Affordable Housing Program provides safe and affordable housing options to extremely low income individuals.  Rent is set at 30% of a tenant's income and that includes utilities.  Parkview owns 37 homes throughout King County.  The homes are purchased with dollars provided through grants from a variety of local, state and federal housing programs.

Neighborhood Matching Fund Ideas Fair - March 29, 2003

It’s fun!  It’s inspiring!  It’s a sharing of ideas, expertise, resources.  And it’s free!  It’s the Neighborhood Matching Fund Ideas Fair on March 29 from 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at Seattle Central Community College, 1701 Broadway.  Through the Neighborhood Matching Fund, you can apply for City dollars to make improvements in your neighborhood.  Come see and hear how other neighborhoods are using the Neighborhood Matching Fund for projects ranging from parks to neighborhood events to farmers markets.  You’ll learn how to put the Matching Fund to use in your neighborhood. Whether you are in the "just thinking about a project idea" stage, in the "ready to apply for money" stage, or in the midst of a project, this is the place to be!

The first hour of the workshop from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. will feature displays of successful projects including playgrounds, computer centers, traffic improvements, public art, facility improvements, design projects, festivals and events, and more.  You can informally discuss ideas, strategies, and hear success stories, then visit the fundraising resource table where successful fundraisers will answer your questions and offer hints about what worked for their projects.

In the second hour from 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., you will have a choice of four different workshop and learn about two new initiatives being offered by the Department of Neighborhoods through the Neighborhood Matching Fund.

·        NEW! Race relations and social justice projects.

·        New and improved neighborhood organizing projects.

·        Writing a competitive application.

·        How to get started with a neighborhood project.

Coffee and refreshments will be provided.  Don’t miss this chance to see what other neighborhoods have done and to talk with experienced neighborhood activists on how to pull it all together!  Call the Department of Neighborhoods at 684-0464 for more information.

Reclaiming Streets for as Public Places:  Possible Matching Fund Project?

Check out http://www.cityrepair.org/ir.html to read about Portland's City Repair group.  The group sponsors what it calls “intersection repairs.”

An Intersection Repair is a citizen-led conversion of an urban street intersection into a public square.  Streets are often the only public space in neighborhoods.  Most streets have been designed primarily to serve motor vehicles.  With an Intersection Repair, that public space is reclaimed for the whole community.  The intersection of pathways becomes a place for people to come together. The space becomes a Place - a public square.  For an image of the first Intersection Repair project, see http://cityrepair.org/images/ssq97-aerial.jpg .
