1.       Neighborhood Matching Fund Workshop:  Learn how to develop your ideas and get inspired by new ideas based on the success of those who have utilized the Neighborhood Matching Fund at a workshop on Saturday, May 19 from 9 a.m. until noon at Seattle Central Community College, 1701 Broadway, 3rd Floor.  Talk to staff from the Neighborhood Matching Fund program, Seattle Parks and Recreation and Seattle Transportation.  Topics include neighborhood involvement, community gardens, public art, fundraising, landscaping public spaces, neighborhood histories, neighborhood traffic safety, neighborhood computer labs and community kiosks. 2.       Congratulations RNA!  The Roosevelt Neighbors Alliance has been awarded a Small and Simple Neighborhood Matching Fund award for $8,240 for its Petanque Court at University Playground.

 

3.       View Ridge Annual Meeting:  The View Ridge Community Council will host its annual meeting on May 16 at 7:30 p.m. in Perry Hall at the Sand Point Methodist Community Church, 4710 NE 70th Street.  Councilmember Heidi Wills will be the featured speaker.  For further information, contact Bob Lucas at 206-526-0575 or blucas5134@aol.com.

 

4.       Wedgwood General Meeting:  The Wedgwood Community Council will host a general meeting on Thursday, May 10 at 7 p.m. at Wedgwood Presbyterian Church.  The featured guest will be Captain Dan Oliver, the new precinct captain for the North Precinct.

 

5.       International Migratory Bird Day:  Come learn about migratory birds at Woodland Park Zoo's celebration of International Migratory Bird Day on Saturday, May 19 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Meet at the Zoo's Family Farm near the south gate plaza at N 50th and Fremont Avenue N.  The cost is free with Zoo admission.  For further information, call the Special Events Hotline at 206-615-0076 or visit the Zoo's website at http://www.zoo.org/. 

 

6.       Migratory Bird Festival at Discovery Park:  Celebrate at the International Migratory Bird Day Festival on Saturday, May 5, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Discovery Park, 3801 W Government Way.  The program is free, but pre-registration is required for the bird and plant tours.  To pre-register or for more information, please contact David Takami at 206-386-4263 or david.takami@ci.seattle.wa.us.

8.       Honor Children's Advocates:  The Children's Alliance invites you to honor organizations and outstanding advocates for children at Voices for Children on May 16 from 6-9 p.m. at the Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue.  $45 for members and $50 for non-members.  Reservations are due May 9.  Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center is one of the event sponsors.  For further information, contact the Children's Alliance at 206-324-0340 or voices@childrensalliance.org.

 

9.       Neighborhood Leadership Workshops:  The Department of Neighborhoods is again sponsoring its Neighborhood Leadership Program. To pre-register for any of the events below, contact Randy Wiger at 206-684-0719 ext. 1 or randy.wiger@ci.seattle.wa.us.

·         Introduction to Project Management:  Monday, May 14, 6-9:30 p.m. at the Seattle-King County Chapter American Red Cross, 1900-25th Avenue S.  This workshop will introduce the basic techniques for managing successful projects:  defining the project scope, developing a project plan and budget, gaining community support, working with contractors and measuring results. 

·         Volunteer Management for Grassroots Groups:  Monday, May 21, 6-9:30 p.m. at the Seattle-King County Chapter American Red Cross, 1900-25th Avenue S.  This workshop will teach you how to organize volunteers in your neighborhood group to get things done.  Learn effective ways to involve your neighbors, divide the work and ensure that projects get finished.

·         Oh, No!  Not Another Meeting!  Monday, June 4, 6-9:30 p.m. at the Seattle-King County Chapter American Red Cross, 1900-25th Avenue S.   Come and find out about some alternatives to the typical business meeting.  Learn to design meaningful gatherings that engage people from different backgrounds and raise rather than lower the group's energy level.  Explore other means of communication to move your agenda forward. 

·         Getting the Word Out:  Make Headlines!  Monday, June 11, 6-9:30 p.m. at the Seattle-King County Chapter American Red Cross, 1900-25th Avenue S.  Learn how to write and issue effective press releases that will generate headlines for your organization.  We will also talk about what makes news, how to talk to reporters and how to organize a neighborhood media event.

·         Tools for Planning:  Recognizing and Utilizing Individual and Community Assets:  Saturday, June 2, 9 a.m.-12:20 p.m. at Miller Community Center, 330 19th Avenue E.  This workshop will teach participants how to recognize their own and others' assets (skills, knowledge, abilities) and how to incorporate them into planning.  Attendance at this event is limited to 25.

 

10.   Technology Matching Fund:  The City is accepting applications for the 2001 Technology Matching Fund.  The application deadline is Monday May 21.  For further information or an application, go to http://www.cityofseattle.net/tech or call 206-684-0600.  The City is seeking innovative community projects designed to: expand public access to computers and the Internet, increase technology literacy / teach computer skills, provide or enhance services to limited English speakers, seniors, the disabled community and/or the homeless and link communities together using technology.

 

11.   NMF Application Deadline:  The deadline to apply for the Small and Simple Projects Fund through the Neighborhood Matching Fund (NMF) is Monday, May 21.  Neighborhood groups seeking awards of $10,000 or less for projects that can be completed in six months or less can apply. 12.   Northeast Library News:  The Seattle Public Library board of trustees has selected the Miller/Hull Partnership to design the expansion of the Northeast Library.  The $4.6M expansion project will include nearly 8,000 square feet of additional space, an updated collection of books, more seating, new computer work stations, more parking and a meeting room.  For further information, call 206-615-1621 or go to: http://www.spl.lib.wa.us/ and click on Libraries for All.

 

13.   I-5 Construction near Ravenna:  On Monday, April 23rd crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation began work to rehabilitate and resurface the northbound Interstate 5 bridge crossing NE Ravenna Boulevard in Seattle.  The work will have significant impacts on traffic.  The work will continue through the end of June. The most significant impacts to traffic will occur over the 19 days between May 6 and May 25.  During that time, northbound I-5 will be reduced to two lanes across the Ravenna bridge around the clock while crews prepare and pour a new surface on the bridge deck.  From May 6 through May 15, the two right lanes will be closed.  From May 16 through May 25, crews will switch sides and close the two left lanes.  Motorists should expect heavy congestion on northbound I-5 throughout this time, especially during evening commute hours. During this project, parking will be restricted in the Ravenna Park and Ride lot below I-5.  For updated information, call the Commuter Information Line at 206-368-4499.

15.   University Village:  A final Design Review meeting is scheduled on May 21 at a time and place to be determined.

 

16.   University Community Stakeholder Forums:  The Department of Neighborhoods is hosting a series of stakeholder forums to figure out ways to revitalize the U District and promote partnerships between the city, the UW and others.  The first forum was held on Wednesday, April 25 at 7:30 a.m. in the U District (with one day's notice!).  For information about future forums, contact Deidre Grace at 684-8896 or deirdre.grace@ci.seattle.wa.us.

 

17.   PCC Meeting:  "Keep the Co-op" is holding a public meeting on Saturday, May 19 from 1-3 p.m. at the Ravenna Eckstein Community Center to review summary financial data from the Ravenna PCC store and to decide upon a course of action from here.  For further information, contact Paul Birkeland at pbirkeland@seanet.com.
