QFC Gas Station:
QFC has applied for a master use permit to construct a five-pump,
self-service gas station near the back entrance to University Village. The project includes a 115 square foot kiosk
under a 4,000 square foot canopy and installation of two underground fuel
storage tanks (120,000 gallons and 116,000 gallons). It will involve relocation of nine parking spaces, removal of
five parking spaces and future demolition of the existing maintenance
building. The Project Number is 2204741
and the project location is 2746 NE 45th Street. A SEPA Environmental Determination is
required for the project as well as other permits. To comment on the project, contact Paul Janos at Department of
Design, Construction and Land Use, 700 Fifth Avenue, Suite 2000, Seattle,
WA 98104-5070, by phone at 206-233-7195,
by email at paul.janos@seattle.gov
or by fax at 206-233-7902. The deadline
to comment is December 18, 2002. 3.
Vote for Official City Bird: Seattle has an official flag, official seal,
namesake (Chief Sealth) and flower (dahlia), but it doesn't have an official
bird. The Seattle Audubon Society is asking
citizens to vote for the bird that best represents the city's essence. Ballot boxes have been placed around town in
schools, city offices and nature centers. There's a call-in number (206-523-4483) and an online voting site www.seattleaudubon.org to register
your vote. Leading contenders so far
include the great blue heron, a large bird that nests in dense colonies; the
northern flicker, a ground-feeding woodpecker with bright orange under its
wings and Bewick's wren, a feisty backyard nester. Others that might be
nominated are the bald eagle, varied thrush and dark-eyed junco. 4.
Library Closure:
Due to citywide budget cuts, all branches of the Seattle Public Library
(except the Washington Talking Book and Braille Library) will be closed from
Tuesday, December 17 through Monday, December 23. The libraries will reopen Thursday, December 26. During the closure, book return slots will
be locked and the on-line catalogue turned off. Late fees will not accrue. 5.
Holiday Food Drive:
The Fire Department will once again participate with other Seattle area
organizations in the annual Emergency Feeding Program. Seattle fire stations have barrels that will
serve as collection points for food donations from citizens. The following foods are especially
needed: canned fruits and vegetables
(corn, green beans, apple sauce, etc.), canned tuna, juices, soups, peanut
butter, canned milk and beef stew. The
barrels will be available at local fire stations from November 11th through
December 20th, 2002 to accept donations.
6.
Adopt a Pet:
The Seattle Animal Shelter has joined with more than 1,000 other pet
adoption centers nationwide for "Home 4 the Holidays 2002." This event, organized to raise awareness of
the joys of owning shelter-adopted pets, hopes to link more than 200,000 dogs,
cats, puppies and kittens with loving, adoptive families. Adopting a pet saves that animal’s life and
reduces unnecessary euthanasia of healthy, adoptable animals. Adoption packages range from $30 to $85 and
include: initial vaccinations, deworming, free health exam at a local
veterinarian’s office, spay or neuter, microchip and a Seattle Pet License. Gift certificates are available. For further information call
206-386-PETS. Information and photos of
animals currently available for adoption are posted on the shelter’s web site
at www.seattleanimalshelter.org.

Cameras on Montlake Boulevard: Laurelhurst has been working with the
Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) on the possibility of
getting cameras installed on the highly congested Montlake Boulevard. A project is currently underway that will install
a couple of new cameras in the vicinity of the U-district. One of them will be on Montlake Boulevard between
SR-520 and the Montlake Bridge. This
camera will look north along Montlake Boulevard most of the time (although it
may be pointed in other directions occasionally for operational reasons). Although construction timelines are
unpredictable due to weather conditions and other factors, that camera should
be installed early next year. The plan is
to make the image available on the WSDOT website shortly afterward. LCC has requested that the camera be
installed north rather than south of the Montlake Bridge because the southern
location will not allow people to see the congestion between the Bridge and
University Village. Traffic studies
indicate a typical afternoon delay of 18 minutes. LCC has requested one or more cameras showing the half-mile
between Husky Stadium and University Village.
LCC has requested that CUCAC address this issue and the possibility of
using the UW’s fiber for this. For
further information about this project, contact Jason Gibbens, NW Region
Freeway Operations, at GibbenJ@wsdot.wa.gov. 8.
