1.       Council to Consider Changes to Rules and Procedures:  The Seattle City Council will meet as a Committee of the Whole on Monday, September 8, at 2:30 p.m. in Council Chambers to consider proposed changes to the City Council Rules and Procedures.  Final voting action on these changes is scheduled for September 15.

 

Changes to the Rules and Procedures being proposed include, but are not limited to: providing for electronic attendance of Council members in certain emergency situations; adding language regarding exemptions to electronic recording; changing certain parliamentary sections and language; and correcting various wording and format errors. Complete text of these proposed changes will be available after September 3.

2.       Council to Review Quasi-Judicial Rules:  The Seattle City Council and department staff will participate in a refresher training session to review its rules and procedures regarding quasi-judicial decisions following its weekly briefings meeting on Monday, September 8.  Quasi-judicial decisions are those that determine the legal rights, duties or privileges of specific parties in a hearing, such as a rezone of a single property or review of a Council conditional use proposal for a particular property.  Both the Council and the State have adopted special rules regarding such decisions.  The Council meeting will be held from 10:30 a.m. - noon in Council Chambers and is open to the public.  The meeting will be cablecast live on Seattle Channel 21/28 and webcast live at www.cityofseattle.net/council.  

 

3.       Victory Celebration:  The Provail Burke Gilman Tenant’s Organizing Committee is pleased to announce that LIHI renewed the Section 8 contract and LIHI and Provail signed a Purchase and Sale Agreement!  The tenants wish to show their thanks and appreciation for community support of their efforts to preserve their homes. 4.       Vote on September 16!  September 16 is the Primary Election.  Polls are open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m.  The official voters pamphlet was mailed to voters, but is also available at libraries and at http://www.metrokc.gov/elections/.  The League of Women Voters Primary Election Ballot Issues Guide and Candidate Roster are available at http://seattle.wa.lwv.org/.

 

5.       Off Leash Area Work Party at Magnuson Park:  September 6 from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Restoration clean up and invasive removal sponsored by the Magnuson Dogwalkers Association.  For further information, contact Theresa McEwen at 206-615-0691.

18.   CeaseFire Leadership Training for Young People:  The CeaseFire Foundation of Washington is seeking applications from high school students interested in reducing gun injury and death through social and political activism.  Sign up for a yearlong leadership development program to learn how to organize social and political advocacy campaigns around the issue of gun violence, lobby for gun safety measures in Olympia, and work with other youth to educate your community about the issue of firearm-related injury and death.  Attend an open house, September 16, 5:30-7:00 p.m. at the CeaseFire Foundation office in Seattle.  Contact Christi Lardy at 206.322.1236 or christi@washingtonceasefire.org for more information about the program and directions to the office.

25.   U District Lectures and Walking Tours:  Historic Seattle and the Seattle Architectural Foundation invite those interested to a lecture and tour series at the U Heights Center:

·         Lectures:  Tuesday, October 14 and 21, 7-9 p.m. in the U Heights Center auditorium.  Tickets (two evening sessions): $20 members; $30 general public.  (Individual tickets as available at the door each evening on a space available basis).

 

On October 14, community historian Paul Dorpat will introduce the physical character of the neighborhood through photos that track the development of the area prompted by the re-location of the territorial university to the present campus with photos of the development of fraternities, boarding houses, residences, and apartments, schools, churches and a library and the expansion of the commercial district.  Following this presentation, Richard Sorenson, Director of University Heights Center, will lead a tour of the historic building.

 

On October 21, Walt Crowley will address the colorful period of the sixties in the District, including the role of the Blue Moon Tavern as a gathering place. Other speakers will address how pressures for student housing, traffic flow, and services have changed and will share the results of a recently conducted city-sponsored historic resources inventory.  There will be discussion of the neighborhood improvement project for “the Ave” and future plans to bring vitality and economic well being to this historic neighborhood.

 

·         Walking tour:  Saturday, October 18, 1-4 p.m. at a meeting location to be announced to registrants.  Tickets: $15 members; $20 general public.  Space is limited; pre-registration is encouraged.

 

·         Research:  Thursday, October 23, 6-7:30 p.m. at the Special Collections, Archives and Manuscripts Division, University of Washington, Allen Library, Ground Floor.  Tickets: Free but space is limited.  Sign up at lecture sessions.
