2. Landmark Fence Has Gone to Bid - Final Award Pending!

1) Good NEWS! The Landmark Fence will be reality very soon!!

We wish to express our appreciation to the University Family YMCA for generously donating attention and space to help us collect the bids and host the bid opening.

On September 24th, we received three bidders for the project. We anticipate a contract will be awarded by mid to late October. An “inflated bidding climate” lead to the bids being approximately 50% higher than expected due to contractors having plenty of work and high steel prices. Additionally, City law requires our park project to accept the low bidder, if the low bidder is qualified to do the work. At this time, we are gathering information on qualifications with the help of the Parks Department. RNA needs to begin the construction this Fall or risk losing the Neighborhood Matching Fund grant.

It looks as if the RNA can afford to award for the main gateway, or "Base Bid", which includes construction of six river rock pillars, connecting low 2 ft. river rock walls, metal picket fencing topping the low walls, electrical work, artwork installation and two lanterns.

The bids for the remaining section along NE 50th Street (described as "Additives") were over our budget. We are looking at ways to quickly raise more money so as to build the whole. We will also look at other creative ways to make the most of the project this Fall. Potentially, we may finish the remainder as another phase.

2) Tracy Hager has delivered the Artifacts artworks! They are wonderful! She has created a plan for placement in the piers, and intends to work closely with RNA and the stone mason during installation. They are currently in storage in Nancy's basement.

3) The RNA is organizing several parts of this construction project. We are creating the Foundation Stones, coordinating with the Seattle Conservation Corp to demo the existing fence and set up the security fence, paying for the security fence and purchasing the stone partially donated by Lakeview Stone.

Request for volunteers:

Please reply to this email if you are able to help with the park project in the coming weeks/months. Your name will be added to the park committee list for updates and volunteer requests.

- One of the volunteer tasks will be picking up river rocks for the Foundation Stones, delivering them to the engravers and bringing them back again. We'll be doing this in the near future. (You still - just - have time to get a Foundation Stone to be included in the main gateway!)

- We request your help on raising additional cash in a short frame of time! If you have a great idea on corporate or private contributors that would be interested in helping us build the whole project at one time, please contact us by replying to this email.

4. GLANCING BACK 1955 - 1965: Outstanding Work by some of the University of Washington’s Top Artists
October 1 – November 15, 2004

RNA welcomes BIF's, a "new" gallery in our community opened in 2003, and is located at 5828 Roosevelt Way NE. Bif, himself, is a resident in the RNA neighborhood.
Glancing Back 1955 - 1965, on view from October 1-November 15, showcases the work of some of the University of Washington’s most distinguished artists. From colorist Wendell Brazeau, ceramist Howard Kottler to internationally renowned print maker Glen Alps, these works capture the raw emotions and new vision that help mark the legacy of the Art Department at the University of Washington in the middle of the last century.

The artists were selected for their profound influence on literally hundreds of professional artists from throughout the northwest. “These works are incredibly powerful. They tell stories for people and events that have made a lasting impression on the northwest,” says gallery owner Bif Brigman. “BIF’s is honored to exhibit these symbols of NW art history. Every Seattleite should see this exhibition because these works provide a deeper context and understanding of the art and artists who have shaped art as we know it in the Pacific Northwest.”

Other prize-winning artists whose work will be on display in Glancing Back 1955 - 1965 include: Robert Sperry, George Tsutakawa, William Hixson, Ambrose Patterson, Virginia Banks, Irwin Caplan, Warren Hill, Patti Warashina, C. Louis Hafermehl, Boyer Gonzales, Mutsuo Yanagihara and Ray Hill.

ABOUT BIF’s
A privately owned gallery, BIF’s was founded in 2003 as a venue to highlight the regional artists of the 20th century who were producing in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. It is fast becoming known throughout the region for its distinguished collection of historical and modern NW fine art as well as, sculpture, and decorative arts.

BIF’s is located 5828 Roosevelt Way NE at Ravenna, and is open every day, except Monday and Tuesday, 12am to 5:30pm daily, and noon to 4 pm on Sundays. 206.522.1607.

6. Yes, Join!

The RNA's name says it all - we're an "alliance" of neighbors, grass roots and community lead. RNA is as strong as its membership, so help us achieve our goals by being an active member: come to our meetings and take part in making positive changes to improve our community.

RNA isn't about money, everyone in our community matters. But dues-paying members are the ones that are tallied as RNA "members", which is important for validating our organization to the city, other organizations and grant makers. Due-paying members get the newsletter out, pay for stamps, support RNA organizational expenses.

Dues range from a welcomed $10 to a more generous contribution of $30 (or more).

To join: Send in the membership form!
