Dear Friends of Dahl Playfield:

Hope you all recently enjoyed a happy holiday with your friends/families. I’ve been receiving some phone calls of late, inquiring after the scope and status of the Dahl Playfield Renovation Project. Please take a moment to read about where we are now and where we are headed.

We are starting to gain fundraising momentum. In addition to the governmental and philanthropic funding resources we have been gathering, we have received individual donations of $1,610 so far (this just from THREE families!) Moreover, we have received pledges of another $600. If you’ve been thinking of making a donation, now is the time. The tax year is almost over and your donation is tax deductible. Also, donations are an important measure of community support. As we begin to approach larger organizations, asking for $50,000 - $100,000, we are in a much stronger position if we can demonstrate a neighborhood commitment ($$) to this effort.

Donating is easy…make checks payable to “University Prep” in the memo field write “Dahl Playfield Project” send the check to Friends of Dahl Playfield, PO Box 51027, Seattle, WA 98115. If you wish to receive a receipt for tax purposes, please include your name and mailing address. And thank you!

Our most recent community meeting was held November 10th. We had roughly 50 people attendance; some familiar faces and some new faces. Thanks to everyone who was able to make the meeting and give their input. Site Workshop, the architectural firm selected to shepherd us through this exciting design phase, was on hand to facilitate the first of three design sessions. Next meeting is scheduled for January 10th, 7pm, University Prep Gym. At that meeting we will review three possible design concepts and have the opportunity to choose a direction in which to proceed for the final design. Your attendance can make a difference!

The scope of the Dahl Playfield Renovation Project continues to be designing an area for multi-generational users to include specifically a children’s play structure, as well as cosmetic upgrades to the comfort station and wading pool. The ball fields have also been approved for replacement of the fencing, dugouts and bleachers. In addition, we are mobilizing efforts to include artistic elements into our design, and to improve access to the park (ameliorating arterial traffic concerns).

Some of you may have learned that advocates of a skateboard park have also mobilized and are pursuing their options for the inclusion of a skate park at Dahl. This is a separate effort; it is not part of Dahl Playfield Renovation Project. If you are interested in obtaining more information about this idea, please contact Teresa Sumearll via email TSumearll@prestongates.com.

Next Steering Committee Meeting is Monday, December 6th at 7pm in the Admin Building at U Prep.

Thanks,
Christine Larsen
