Dear
Lake City neighbor,
It
has been several months since we've updated you on the status of plans for a
farmers market in Lake City. Thank you
for your patience. The delay comes as
the result of wanting to secure a location for the market prior to making any
major announcements. At this point, we are in the final stages of securing the
use of the parking lot behind the fire station in Lake City. The lot needs some work, but we're excited
about its accessibility, its proximity to places like the library and the
community center, the adequate space it will provide, and the fact that it's
owned by the city. Thus far, the city
has been very supportive and Karen and Chris, from the Neighborhood Farmers
Market Alliance, will continue to solidify our lease and other details with the
city.
We
are looking at dates around Fathers Day of 2002 for the opening of our
community’s new farmers market. Again,
the market will be open each week on Thursday afternoons/evenings -- this will
continue through the month of October.
At
this point, we would like to begin to generate awareness and excitement in our
community about the coming market. We
have a great opportunity on Saturday, August 4 -- during Lake City Pioneer Days
-- to help spread the word. Several
local farmers will actually set up a mini-farmers market and sell produce in
downtown Lake City. In addition to the
farmers, we are looking for people from Lake City who would be willing to:
(1)
hand out magnets and flyers,
(2)
answer questions at our information table, and/or
(3)
wear eye-catching vegetable costumes that will help to draw attention to the
market.
We'd
greatly appreciate any time that you could spare this day (there are rumors
that it will be great fun!). Below,
you'll find a list of times during the day that we'd like to have volunteers. We'll host a brief training for volunteers
on Thursday, August 2 at 6 p.m., behind the fire station. This will be a time for volunteers to ask
any additional questions that you may have about the market, and for us to
share any late- breaking news with you.
Have
a wonderful summer ... we hope to see you soon.
Warmly,
Tanya
Becker and Aaron Barnett, on behalf of the Lake City Farmers
Market
Steering Committee
