The Green Map System (www.greenmap.org) has inspired almost 140 mapmaking projects around the world in 35 countries on six continents. The GMS has received a number of awards and recognitions, including a "Spirit of the Land" award in 2001 by the Salt Lake City Olympics Organizing Committee and recognitions by the United Nations. Now, the "green map" concept has arrived in Seattle and the local effort is organizing.

The mission of the GMS is:  "to strengthen the community's awareness of and connection to the urban ecology through locally-created visual representations of hometown environments.  Mixing the ancient art of mapmaking with new, interactive media, citizens of all ages and backgrounds are invited to adapt and employ our global iconography and collaborative tools as they chart the green places, environmental resources and socially-significant sites in their own cities.  Green Maps illuminate the inter-connections between society, nature and the built environment, helping residents make lower impact lifestyle choices and discover great ways to get involved in the urban ecology, and simultaneously guide visitors (especially virtual ones) to successful initiatives they can replicate back home."

The GMS was recently featured in an article published in Planning magazine (see http://www.planning.org/pubs/plng01/may011.htm).

This meeting will include:

-introduction to the history and growth of the Green Map System by Wendy Brawer

-discussion of GMS map icons and local mapmaking efforts in other communities

-introduction of local volunteers who are organizing in Seattle

-presentation of early ideas for the Seattle Green Map for discussion and feedback

-discussion of your ideas!

Come and get involved in this exciting initiative.  We look forward to seeing you there.

This is a free event.
