Dear Neighbors,

We wanted to let you know about the accident this morning on NE 45th by Laurelhurst School. There were no injuries. A flatbed truck doing work for Children's Hospital hit the overpass connecting Laurelhurst School with the Playfield, knocking out a six-foot section of handrail and some concrete. The boom on the truck had apparently not been lowered. The police arrived and took an accident report.

Laurelhurst School was between recesses, so there were no children on the playground and there was nobody on the overpass.

The Mayor's Office and Seattle Transportation responded quickly to the accident. In the meantime, Sellen Construction completed a temporary repair of the damage that was later inspected and approved by two of Seattle's transportation engineers. The temporary railing is strong enough until the permanent railing is replaced, but children should not climb on the temporary rail.

The City has designated the repair as a result of this accident as high priority. Seattle Transportation has completed a work order. Repairs should be complete within the next few days, but no longer than two weeks.

The Laurelhurst Community Club appreciates the prompt action of Children's Hospital in contacting the Mayor's office, Laurelhurst School and the Laurelhurst Community Center, and the work of Sellen Construction in temporarily repairing the overpass. Children's has also offered to help find someone to do the necessary galvanizing work should the City experience delays with its contractor.

If you have questions about the repair, please email us back or contact Dave Chew, Seattle's Bridge Maintenance and Operations Manager, at 206-684-8325 or dave.chew@ci.seattle.wa.us.
