09/12/04 Dear Neighbor, We are also in the midst of an exciting election season—as evidenced by the many yard signs in the neighborhood, TV ads and election programming and newspaper stories. Here are details about voter information and registration: Don’t forget to vote! The statewide Primary Election is Tuesday,
September 14, 2002. The polls are open on election day from 7 a.m. to
8 p.m. Check out the official voters pamphlet you received in the mail
for information about the candidates and Seattle Proposition 1, the Families
and Education Levy, that will be on the ballot. You can also read the
voters pamphlet at http://www.metrokc.gov/elections. Or, go to http://seattlepi.com
and click on voters guide to see an excellent voters guide prepared by
the PI and the League of Women Voters. Fire Station 38 Relocation—Do you have ideas for a new location
that will not reduce the response time to our neighbors in times of emergency? If you have questions about this message or any other neighborhood concerns or announcements you would like included in future messages, please email back. The Laurelhurst Community Club (LCC) board of trustees meets at 7 p.m. the second Monday of each month at St. Stephens. All calls and concerns from neighbors are discussed and neighbors are always welcome to attend. Jeannie Hale, LCC President 206-525-5135 =================FIRE STATION 38 RELOCATION================ Fire Station 38 is the station that serves Laurelhurst. It is located at 5503 33rd Avenue NE. Voters approved the Fire Facilities Levy in 2003. The station will be rebuilt to meet the needs of our fire fighters, but there is not enough room on the current site to expand. The City is looking for another location. Do you have any ideas? The City has some site selection criteria. Most importantly, the City does not want to reduce the average four-minute response time that we currently have. This response time is important because it can and has made the difference between life and death for both medical emergencies and fires. The new location must contain about 14,000 square feet, a minimum of 100 feet by 120 feet. Flat sites are preferred because it is easier and less to built on. Should there be displacement of residents or businesses, relocation assistance would be provided. When the rebuilt station is complete, it will meet all current seismic safety codes and provide the full complement of services typical of a station housing one engine and a reserve. If you have ideas for a location of the fire station, please contact Ellen Hansen at 206-386-1366 or ellen.hansen@seattle.gov or just email us back if you’d like to share your stories about response times. ================COMMUNITY CENTER EXPANSION=============== Attend the Project Advisory Team meeting on September 15, 6 p.m. Do you want an expanded community center or maybe you would prefer a new gym built at the Playfield? Maybe you’d like a teen center or have ideas for other kinds of expansion of the center to meet the needs of our neighborhood? The process is now beginning to finally upgrade the Laurelhurst Community Center. It’s been a long haul! LCC worked for eight years to get the funding. In 2000, Seattle voters approved the ProParks Levy providing $2,577,500 for planning, design and construction to expand and upgrade the existing community center. The first step was designation of a Project Advisory Team (PAT) to provide recommendations on the expansion. PAT members are a dozen neighbors selected by the Parks Department. PAT meetings are open to the public. The first PAT meeting is on Wednesday, September 15 from 6-8 p.m. at the community center. At this meeting, the project architect will be introduced and there will be a discussion of project goals. There will likely be community-wide meetings throughout the planning process and other opportunities for involvement and LCC will keep you informed. For further information about expansion of the community center, please contact Joe Herrin at 206-525 6541 or jherrin@heliotrope.cc. =============STRIDES FOR STABILITY 5K RUN / WALK============ Help Support Transitional Housing and Mental Health Care Services September 18, 2004 at Warren G. Magnuson Park
LCC is a longtime supporter of low income and transitional housing. Laurelhurst trustee John Clark represents our neighborhood on the Sand Point Community Housing Association Advisory Committee. He will be participating in the Strides for Stability Run/Walk. If you’d like to join him in this event, please contact him at Jjgclark@earthlink.net or 206-523-3227. ============FRIENDS OF THE SEATTLE LIBRARY FALL BOOK SALE========== September 17-19, 2004 at Warren G.
