02/25/04 Got the Skills to Protect your Community? Apply by March 31st! Can citizens really create change in their communities? You bet they can, and committed citizen activists are about to get a whole lot more effective with the Seattle Audubon Society’s Master Advocate for the Environment course. Have you got passion for the environment, livable communities, and healthy ecosystems? Do you want to make a difference? Many citizens have passion and commitment to create change; the Master Advocate course enriches their passion with proven skills and techniques to be even more effective advocates for the environment. What comprises the Master Advocate course? The 9-week course emphasizes activist techniques that really work: which lobbying methods get results, what to expect when you meet with your legislator, how to formulate a message that resonates with your target audience, what you need to do to get good media coverage, how to plan a grassroots campaign, what negotiation strategies get you what you want, and much, much more. The workshop-format of the course emphasizes participation, practice and networking. This course eliminates the guesswork and teaches skills that get results. Is the Master Advocate course for me? All citizens who are passionate about livable communities and environmental protection and eager to take their advocacy skills to the next level are encouraged to apply. More experienced citizen activists will appreciate this refresher on the latest techniques activists use, and get new ideas. People of color are strongly encouraged to apply. Applications must be received by March 31, 2004. What does the course cost? The Program fee is $100 for citizens / $250 for professional staff. This includes nine reality-based classes taught by professionals and experienced activists, offering practical, useful advice. Plus all course materials, light food and beverages at every class, and a fun graduation party! A limited number of need-based partial scholarships are available. If interested, inquire with your application. When and where are the classes? Classes take place Wednesday evenings, 6:00-8:30pm, April 7 - June 2 in Seattle. How do I apply? Download the application at www.seattleaudubon.org. If I can’t take the Master Advocate course, are there other options? No time for the course?
