03/26/02 Yesterday we had another meeting of the RHS Design Team. The meeting began with a brief discussion of the tours we had last week of Everett High School and Edmonds/Woodway High School. It was decided that we would have a more extensive discussion at our next meeting, especially for the people who were unable to attend the tour. The tours of the high schools were interesting and informative. If you would like more specific information on these high schools, please email me your questions. We then reviewed our progress and the next meetings we will have. Marilyn Brockman of Bassetti Architects then handed out a comment compilation of the four themes we discussed at our last meeting: Learner-Centered Environment, Community Connections, Collaborations, and Aesthetics. Marilyn then presented some examples of the photos that were taken by two of the classes at Roosevelt. The students were to take pictures and comment on the following topics: Where do I learn?, Whom do I learn from?, and Where do I feel safe? The photos and comments were very interesting. A majority of the students felt they learned in the classroom and in areas of the school outside of the classroom, learned from teachers and friends, and felt safe in the school (63%) and in their home/neighborhood. A majority (55%) felt psychologically safe in school, and 27% felt safe in the health/nutrition aspects of school. We then had a bite to eat, and began our brainstorming on "a day in the life" exercise. We broke up into five groups and wrote a script of what life would be like for a high school student in the future. We then shared these scripts with the whole group. We then did the exercise for a teacher, comunity member, parent, administrator, etc. This was an interesting exercise to get us thinking about how these different people may funtion in the building in the future. These profiles will be summarized for our next meeting, and what the common themes were in the profiles. Our next meeting will be a charette, lasting three hours, in which we will explore relationships between different functions of the school. Andrea Wilson
